What your doctor doesn’t know about nutritional medicine may be killing you By Ray D. Strand, M.D.

The writers interest  in Nutritional medicine was ignited by his wife’s illness. She was suffering from Fibromyalgia  ' a truly miserable disease' .When all conventional treatment failed to cure her she was introduced to vitamin supplement. In three months she looked ' stronger than she had been in years' He was dumb founded by his wife's changed circumstances. Medical school does not stress significantly on nutritional medicine hence he decided  to’ run his own clinical trial’. His studies led him to conclude that the process called oxidative stress is the underlying cause of chronic degenerative diseases. Oxidative stress is cell damage by free radicals. Free radicals are mainly oxygen molecules or atoms with one unpaired electron. Free radicals are generated by excessive stress, air pollution cigarette smoke pollution of food and water and ultraviolet sunlight and believe it or not by excessive exercise. These free radicals need to be neutralized by an antioxidant. Our bodies do not produce all the antioxidants we need hence supplements are needed. The lack of this is the main cause of such killer diseases like Coronary artery heart disease, cancer strokes arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer dementia and macular degeneration.
This degenerative process can best be controlled by nutritional supplement.
Quoting the writer ‘ After reviewing medical research studies I have absolutely no doubt that my patients who take high quality nutritive supplement have a health benefit over those who don’t ‘ This approach to health is true preventive medicine and when accompanied by right eating and a consistent exercise program brings excellent results.
There is a chapter dealing with every major killer like heart disease, cancer
Diseases of the eyes etc. How the ‘dark side of oxygen’ affects the working of these important organs and causes disease is dealt with in detail. He has also included many interesting near fatal case studies where he has achieved miraculous recovery.
He has also mentioned that the bias of physicians to nutritional supplement has lead to it being ignored as means to good health. Negative studies on vitamins are the only ones doctors are made aware of. The author claims to have not received a formal medical training in nutrition. The roll of big pharmaceuticals companies in promoting this attitude   can be understood. Drugs bring in big bucks
The message the good doctor wants to convey is this: Both drugs and a healthy immune system is needed which is why he recommends high quality nutritional supplement – because he has ‘never seen patient achieve this kind of response with traditional medicine alone’
A nutritional supplement is not alternative medicine but complementary medicine.
The author puts across his ideas in a very simple and straight forward way.
He has not used very many complicated terms and can be understood by the layman. One reading it would surely be more aware of his health and the steps he needs to maintain prime fitness.
I would say it is a very informative book and very much readable.
