SINUSES

Sinuses are air-filled spaces in the skull that are lined with mucus membranes. They are found around the eyes, nose, forehead, and cheeks, and have openings to the nasal passages. The functions of the sinuses include humidifying and warming inhaled air, insulating surrounding eyes and nerves, increasing voice resonance, and acting as buffers against facial trauma.

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinus membranes. There are two types of sinusitis:

1. Acute sinusitis: It lasts longer than 4 weeks and usually starts with a common cold or allergy, leading to a bacterial infection.

2. Chronic sinusitis: It lasts longer than 12 weeks or occurs more than 4 times per year, with symptoms usually lasting more than 20 days. The membranes of the sinuses and nose are thickened due to constant inflammation.

Symptoms of Sinusitis

- Excessive nasal discharge and mucus with a foul smell.
- Blocked or runny nose.
- Headache or pain and tenderness in the face.
- Fever and sore throat.
- Bad breath or loss of sensation of smell.
- Cough, which is often worse at night.
- Fatigue.

Causes of Sinusitis

- Colds and allergies may cause excessive mucus production, resulting in blocked sinuses.
- Dysfunction of the small hairs (cilia) in the sinuses, which help remove mucus, leading to inflammation.
- Structural issues like a deviated/crooked nasal passage or nasal polyps that block sinus openings.

Prevention Tips

- Consume plenty of fruits and vegetables.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water or hot tea to promote mucus drainage.
- Avoid exposure to cigarette smoke, strong chemical odors, and polluted air.
- Get plenty of rest to support your immune system.

BRONCHITIS

Bronchitis refers to an inflammation of the bronchi or air passages of the lung. It is a breathing disorder affecting the expiratory function. Bronchitis may be acute or chronic. In chronic cases, the disease is of long duration and more serious than the acute type.

Symptoms of Bronchitis

In most cases of bronchitis, the larynx, trachea, and bronchial tubes are acutely inflamed, leading to swelling and irritation. Large quantities of mucus are secreted to protect the inflamed mucous membranes. Symptoms include fever, difficulty in breathing, chest cough, hoarseness, pain in the chest, lack of energy, and depression.

Causes of Bronchitis

- Acute bronchitis may often occur as a sequel to a common cold or an attack of influenza.
- Chronic bronchitis can result from recurring attacks of acute bronchitis and poor food habits.
- Atmospheric pollution and climate can also be contributing factors.
